What Are Stun Guns?

Stun Guns are a type of self-defense weapon that uses high voltage and low amperage to disable an attacker for several minutes.

To determine its ability to drop an assailant to the ground effectively and without permanent harm, consider the size and type of batteries that powers the Stun Gun you choose. 

Always bear in mind the point of using these self-defense weapons is to give you a little extra time to escape to safety.  The larger models offered here work particularly well if you plan to holster your weapon or keep it handy in a large purse or carry-bag.  Large Stun Guns are easier to find in a large purse.

How To Choose A Stun Gun

The most important factor in choosing among Stun Guns is the number, type, and brand of batteries a Stun Gun uses, for this factor largely determines the "take-down" power of your Stun Gun.

Today's Stun Guns come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and even colors.  You may safely let your personal preferences dictate the choice if you've chosen a model that uses:

• Two or three lithium Energizer batteries
• Four or more 9-volt Energizer alkaline batteries
• Four to six AA Energizer alkaline batteries

If you are a petite woman who wants a self-defense weapon that fits comfortably in her hand, consider buying one of the smaller models.  One of our Stun Guns is so small it can fit inside a pack of cigarettes!  If you like the idea of misdirection, consider buying one of the Stun Guns that appears to be a Cell Phone.  Larger models, such as Stun Gun Batons are often chosen by law enforcement, military, and security personnel.  They come in lengths from ten inches to eighteen inches.  The extra length provides a reach you won't get with smaller Stun Guns.

Other features available on some Stun Guns, such as an integrated flashlight, alarm or disable pin, may also appeal to you.  We can't stress enough the importance of your personal comfort level in using Stun Guns, Pepper Spray, or a TASER device, for if you don't take your Stun Gun, TASER device or Pepper Spray with you, how will you protect yourself or your loved ones?

A big part of using a Stun Gun effectively comes from preparing yourself before facing threats to your safety.

Batteries are also important!  Stun Guns that require either lithium batteries, the highest-quality alkaline batteries such as Energizer, or NiMH rechargeable will be more effective, for example, than models using other brands.  Using inferior batteries not only limits the effectiveness of your Stun Gun, but may even void the manufacturer's lifetime warranty. 

The number of batteries in your Stun Gun is extremely important, for the more batteries a Stun Gun has, generally speaking, the sooner you can drop an assailant and escape. 

Did you know that Stun Guns do not rely primarily on pain for results? 

The energy stored in your Stun Gun is dumped into an attacker’s muscles, causing them to do a great deal of work rapidly. This rapid work cycle instantly depletes the attacker’s blood sugar by converting it to lactic acid. In short, the attacker is unable to produce energy for his muscles, and his body stops functioning properly.

Stun Guns also interrupt the tiny neurological impulses that control and direct voluntary muscle movement. When an attacker’s neuro-muscular system is overwhelmed and controlled by the device he loses his balance. Should the attacker be touching you, the current will NOT pass to your body!

Stun Guns can be excellent self-defense weapons, but what if your attacker is unusually large, aggressive, or exceptionally fit?  What if you don't manage in a close-quarter situation to stun him in the most effective places on his body?  What if the batteries in your electronic stun device have gone dead?  In short, if your strategy for self-defense rests on just one Stun Gun, what if you don't have that device available, powered-up, and in your hand at the time of a likely attack?  It makes good sense to buy more than one.
